Plantains

Plantains occur is a wide variety of locations, large broad-leaved plantains are often found in neglected lawns while smaller starweeds may appear in well maintained lawns. Plantains produce clusters of leathery leaves which vary considerably according to the variety.

Greater plantain is a very common weed that often appears in areas suffering from soil compaction. The plant grows as a flat rosette that can withstand mowing, and anchors itself to the ground with a fibrous root system.

Greater plantain is edible and may be used in salads when the leaves are young and tender.
