Overview
In addition to light and water, plants need a range of nutrients if they are to remain in good health. The way lawns are used and maintained breaks the natural recycling process of nutrients. Typically, we do leave grass and other plants found in our lawns to grow, die and then decompose. Decomposition returns nutrients to the soil, and in the absence of this process we have a potential lack of nutrients. In addition, we often remove weeds from our lawns, plants that may be undesirable but assist with fixing nutrients in the soil. We make up for this nutrient loss by adding fertilisers.
A healthy lawn requires different levels of nutrients according to the season, type of soil and the local environment. Fertilisers supply the nutrients that are needed in the right amounts and at the right time. With the correct nutrients available, the grass becomes thicker, greener and the increased density helps prevent moss and weeds from becoming established. Nutrients also stimulate deeper root growth, helping to avoid the lawn becoming stressed during hot, dry weather.
Lawn fertilisers provide the nutrients required by the grass for healthy growth and photosynthesis. The type of soil, exposure to the elements, and living organisms all impact nutrient levels. Primary macronutrients, nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, need to be added as natural processes cannot keep up with the rate at which the nutrients in the plant material are removed. Secondary macronutrients, calcium, magnesium and sulphur, are in less demand but help strengthen the cell walls, maintain colour and the growth of leaves and roots.
Micronutrients, or trace elements, are required in smaller quantities and play an essential part in maintaining the health colour and growth of the lawn. However, their absence can lead to significant growth and health issues, so levels need to be ensured.
The proportions of macronutrients and micronutrients that are needed varies throughout the year. In winter, for example, lower levels of nitrogen are required in order not to encourage too much growth. The fertilisers applied by Lawnosity are tailored to the conditions of the lawn, the soil and the season.
