Mining Bees
Mining bees are medium sized, do not sting and pollinate many different types of plant. The bees nest in the ground, hence their name, and excavated soil is built into a small mound at the entrance of the nest with a characteristic crater at the top.
Mining bees are essentially solitary insects. They may be found living communally, but without the social structure of a true colony made up of workers, drones and a queen. The building of nests does not harm plants, and can be beneficial in terms of aeration. The small mounds of soil can be easily swept away without any harm to the bees or the lawn.
These fascinating insects are extremely beneficial, and a welcome addition to the garden.
